Description

Introduction

Shrimp scad locally known as Bakka and scientifically known as Alepes djedab is a small, silver-white fish species found in the Arabian Sea of Pakistan. Typically measuring 20-30 centimeters (8-12 inches) in length, it has a slender body with a bluish-green back and dark lateral line spots. Shrimp scad thrives in warm, coastal waters and feeds on zooplankton, small fish, and crustaceans.

This fish is commercially important in parts of Asia and used in various culinary dishes. However, sustainable management is crucial to prevent overfishing and protect marine ecosystems. Shrimp scad’s adaptability and presence in various cuisines make it an interesting and valuable species in the seafood industry.

Flavor Profile

Shrimp scad (Bakka) has a distinctive flavor profile that combines the delicate sweetness of its white flesh with a mild, slightly briny undertone. The taste is often described as clean and light, making it a versatile addition to various dishes. Its flavor is not overpowering, allowing it to pair well with a wide range of seasonings and ingredients.

When cooked, shrimp scad retains its natural sweetness while absorbing the flavors of accompanying spices, herbs, or sauces. Its versatility and ability to complement different culinary styles make it a popular choice in many Asian and international cuisines, contributing to its culinary appeal. It’s used often by fish frying joints across Pakistan.

Nomenclature

English Name: Shrimp Scad, Skipjack Trevally, Yellow Stripe Scad

Local Name: Bakka

Scientific Name: Alepes djedab

Habitat

In the Arabian Sea, shrimp scad (Bakka) thrives in a warm and tropical marine environment. This species is commonly found in coastal and offshore waters along the Arabian Sea’s western and southwestern shores. It prefers water temperatures ranging from 24°C to 30°C (75°F to 86°F) and is known to inhabit the upper layers of the water column.

Shrimp scad are pelagic, meaning they dwell in the open waters rather than near the seabed. They often swim near the surface and are frequently encountered in schools, making them accessible to both artisanal and commercial fisheries operating in the region.

Catching Method

In the Arabian Sea, commercial fishing for shrimp scad primarily employs a combination of purse seining and gillnetting techniques. Purse seining involves encircling schools of shrimp scad with a large net that is then drawn closed like a purse, capturing the fish in the process.

Gillnetting utilizes vertical nets with mesh sizes designed to catch shrimp scad while allowing smaller or undesirable species to escape. These methods are often used by both small-scale artisanal fishermen and larger commercial fishing vessels.

Physical Attributes

Shrimp scad (Bakka) in the Arabian Sea exhibit distinct physical characteristics. They have slender, elongated bodies with a silvery-white color on their sides and belly, while their dorsal area tends to be bluish-green. These fish typically grow to lengths of 20-30 centimeters (8-12 inches) and sometimes reach up to 40 centimeters (16 inches).

Along their lateral line, you can often observe a series of dark spots. Their sleek design and coloration are well-suited for life in the open waters of the Arabian Sea, where they swim in schools near the surface, making them easily recognizable and accessible to both commercial and artisanal fishermen.

Cutting Preferences

Since Horse Shrimp Scad is relatively a small fish, the only preferable cutting for it is whole (gutted).

Approx. Cutting Yields

– Whole: 100% yield

– Gutted: 80% yield

– Headless and Gutted: 60% yield

– Slices: 55% yield

– Boneless: 34% yield

Cooking Preferences

In Pakistan and South Asia, shrimp scad is a popular seafood choice with diverse cooking preferences. It is commonly enjoyed in a variety of traditional dishes. One popular method is to prepare shrimp scad as part of a curry, where it absorbs the rich flavors of spices like turmeric, coriander, and cumin.

Grilling or shallow frying shrimp scad with a blend of regional spices and herbs is another favored approach, preserving its delicate flavor and offering a crispy texture. It’s also used in soups, stews, and biryanis, showcasing its versatility in South Asian cuisine. The cooking style may vary by region but consistently highlights its sweet, mild taste.

Health Benefits

Shrimp scad from the Arabian Sea offers several health benefits. It is a low-calorie and lean source of protein, making it an excellent choice for those looking to maintain or lose weight while meeting their protein needs. It’s also rich in essential nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, which support heart and brain health, and various vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B12, selenium, and iodine.

Additionally, the consumption of shrimp scad may contribute to improved bone health due to its calcium content. However, it’s crucial to be mindful of potential contaminants like mercury, so consumption should be in moderation and as part of a balanced diet.
